1337 – Revisited

Earlier today I asked why the heck a WordPress achievement button was made for the odd number of 1337 – here’s the responses I got:

“congratulations on the 1337 likes! thanks wordpress, for such random info! just for fun i did a google search and ‘internet slang’ defines 1337 as ‘elite’. it’s official, tamra jo – you’re a wordpress elite!! : ) aleya”

“Congrats, you elitist! :)

I have stories about elitists and none of them are good – – so, I decided to re-check the actual definitions of elitism and elitists, which are:

e·lit·ism or é·lit·ism

  1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
  2. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

  1. Someone who believes in rule by an elite group.

See why I’m struggling with this?

Elitism is 180 degrees south of how I feel about the world – Even though I believe this to be a tongue-in-cheek way of saying, “Hey!  Way to go!  Lots of people here dig what you write” – I still cringe at the term Elite.

I have no issues with self-esteem, confidence or satisfaction in my abilities and projects.   I’m glad that what I write is informative or entertaining to others….

I just really, really don’t want to be an Elitist – – so, anyone know the next award level?   Cuz I gotta hurry up and get there before this label turns me into an arrogant jackarse of a snob…

The Joy and Despair of Awards

I’m so honored when I receive an award nomination – I have no problem linking back to the fantabulous blogger who nominated me – I usually have fun answering the questions, though I sometimes ramble on for too long.

But the nomination of others always throws me for a loop – I don’t want to leave anyone out – Sometimes I award folks who have already received the award – I hate discovering I just nominated someone who posted a “No Awards Zone” piece of art in their widget that I somehow missed – I hate to think people think I’m awarding them just to get clicks back to my own blog (apparently – this happens….)

And while I love to introduce those in my circle to a new-to-me blogger, I just find myself procrastinating over the whole awards thing – in fact, long enough that I somehow managed to lose the info regarding who nominated me for one!   Which makes me feel awful.

So from here on out I will graciously acknowledge but decline future award nominations, but rest assured, if I like your blog, then I will make sure my community knows about you one way or another.

Feel free to pick up your no-strings attached Because You’re Fantabulous and Awesome Blossom awards, if I’ve followed you, liked a post or commented at your site!

And if you came to the Awards page to discover new-to-you blog links, check out the “My Community” area in the sidebar.

Thanks ever so much to you all!

The Leibster Award

liebsterI confess, I was nominated for awards, twice, during my “I’m on sabbatical” period in early June.  AND, I managed to somehow move the nomination emails from my Inbox to Lost-In-Cyberspace, instead of “AToDo” folder – or at least that’s what I think happened..

If you were the blessed soul who nominated me for this award, please, please shoot me …. no, I mean, send me a comment or email so I can get a link to your awesomeness posted here.

UPDATE! – I found the nomination link!  Right on my own ‘About Me” page – DUH!

Thanks ever so much to newbloggycat for nominating me!   I just recently started following and am overjoyed with the daily jokes, quips and quotes to be found here.   If you’re looking for pick-me-ups and belly laughs to intersperse throughout your day as a break from those of us who simply can’t post anything without breaking the 2,000 word mark – this is where you should be!

As for the Rules for Liebster:

  • Post 11 random facts about yourself.
  • Answer your nominator’s 11 questions
  • Nominate 11 deserving blogs with less than 200 followers and ask them 11 questions.

I love this!   A chance to show some support for those blogs I follow that are just getting up and running with their readership!

11 Random Facts about myself:

I truly, truly am not as awful as the fact of losing a nomination may indicate – – I think….

I have calico hair – medium brown in winter, light brown in summer and glints of red and gold in the sunlight.

My junior high nemesis used to call me “Tam-Bra” to make fun of the fact that I was such a stick, I didn’t even need one till high school.

I started working for neighbors when I was 11 – and for companies by age 13.  I’ve worked so many full-time, part-time & temp gigs over the years that whenever I’m required to list everywhere I’ve worked, all skill sets/certifications and my age for any job that requires background checks and clearances, the polygraph technician always believes me to be lying.  Haven’t failed one yet – and some, I even go to coffee with after –  I’m a treasure chest full of war stories…

I believe storytelling to be our greatest gift and most cherished resource.

I believe telling ourselves and others stories that aren’t in our best interests to be the bane of our existence.

I try to be an Optimistic Realist – – some days I fail and come across as a Cynic.

One lifetime can never, ever be enough – so I’m trying to pack in as much as I can, just in case the reincarnationists are wrong.

I believe my two greatest gifts to the world are my sons.

I miss the long history discussions I used to have with my Dad.

I’m a Colorado native – tried moving elsewhere a few times, but never lasted more than a few months.  I love it here.

Answer 11 questions from the nominator

People, including myself, make me laugh

11. Coffee or tea?

Show some love for other bloggers:

There are a couple here who didn’t have their follower stats showing, but due to comment/likes numbers and number of posts, I decided I would be safe in adding them to the ‘under 200 followers’ list.  There are some here who are very, very close to 200 – So c’mon community!   Let’s shower them with views!

You can’t hide the spark!

I’m not rescinding the nomination, just because I figured out who nominated me!

The WordPress Family Award

My Family is Awesome!
My Family is Awesome!

Some while back, Melanie over at MotherofNine generously gifted me with my pick from a bouquet of awards – of course, I picked the WordPress Family award.

A message from Shaun, the creator of this award:

This is an award for everyone who is part of the “WordPress Family” I started this award on the basis that the WordPress family has taken me in, and showed me love and a caring side only WordPress can. The way people take a second to be nice, to answer a question and not make things a competition amazes me here. I know I have been given many awards, but I wanted to leave my own legacy on here by creating my own award, as many have done before. This represents “Family” we never meet, but are there for us as family. It is my honour to start this award. Thank you, Shaun @ http://prayingforoneday.wordpress.com/

The guidelines are as follows:

1. Display the award logo on your blog.

2. Link back to the person who nominated you.

3. Nominate 10 others you see as having an impact on your WordPress experience and family.

4. Let your 10 Family members know you have awarded them.

5. That is it. Just please pick 10 people that have taken you as a friend, and spread the love.

So here are the most cherished members of my WordPress Family – I’ve got it all – the brothers who know what’s what and are prepared for everything, the artistic aunts that cheer me up and inspire me, the grandma that always gives me words of wisdom, the cousins who share my interests and make me laugh, the creative sisters who look out for me & let me borrow their clothes – and last, but not least, the knowledgeable uncles that promise not to snitch when I had one beer too many!

Always Here If you Need Me Award

AlwaysThereQuite surprised to find the Always Here If you Need Me award waiting in  my inbox this a.m., compliments of a fellow voracious reader and writer, Julian Froment.   As I have been remiss in doing my duty in the awards arena, I vow to get caught up on all of them, today!  So get ready for a slew of wonderful blogs to visit!

The rules for this award are:

  • Post a picture of the award somewhere on your blog.
  • List 5 things that make you happy.
  • Choose 3 people to nominate who have been a virtual shoulder to cry on, checked in on you when they knew things were rough, or have always been there for you.
  • Comment on their blogs and let them know of the nomination.

5 Things that make me happy

Sitting in the quiet of a summer night, or that magical moment just before sunrise – when the calm of the world enters my soul.

Finding out that something I said or wrote helped someone else through a rough patch.

Having a whole day to write without having to do any pesky chores, like cooking, cleaning the bathroom, laundry…

Going to sleep on fresh, dried-by-wind-and-sunshine bed sheets.

When one of my cockamamie inventions actually works, perfectly, the first time around.

Nominate 3 people who are there for me

Aw…c’mon…only 3?!?   This is why I get behind on awards – the nominees portion of the drill always trips me up!   Anyone mind if I break with precedent and nominate more?  Great,  let’s get started then…

Here are the folks that inspire, motivate and check in on me.   They share the joy of triumphs, appear with hugs & hankies when heartbreak appears and never, ever,  fail to truly make me Laugh Out Loud:
